Humans used to and on some levels were much healthier. But back in the days of no chemicals they didn't have a great understanding of personal hygiene or cleaniliness in the home. These days we seem to have gone to the other extreme and are too scared to touch anything that hasn't been sterilised, anti bacterilised and neutrilised. And what is interesting is that we are sicker than ever. We can catch the smallest bug, instead of having a bit of a natural immunity to a few things we all seem to be sniffling, coughing and sneezing our way through each day. I'm not saying that we shouldn't wash our hands after going to the toilet or before preparing or eating food etc, all those things we were raised to do. But why are we all becoming almost obsessive/compulsive about it. It's not like we're about to perform surgery. A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of going to a farm with my grandson's kinder group. There were all sorts of lovely animals tp pat and look at. All the children got to pat the lambs, feed the cows and goats. I almost burst out laughing at one point but I felt sorry for the poor child. The little girl had patted a lamb, there was Mum with the anti bacterial wipes, the girl got licked by a cow, Mum squealed in horror and out came the wipes.

Yes hygiene is extremely important but so is living and being healthy. We need to be clean, have our homes clean but we need to read what's in all these products we are using. So many are so scary.

Back in the 80's when my daughters were small, here in Australia we were starting to be aware of the problems with the lack of recycling and the damage being caused to the planet and us humans by chemicals. Back then I started to make my own cleaning products the old fashioned way and I had always used natural soaps anyway. But unfortunately over the years, life got busy and time to make these things got scarce and I got lazy. But I did try to buy the environmentally friendly products from the supermarkets when I saw them, Some of them were so Eco friendly they didn't work, or not very well.

Of course these days there are so many wonderful chemical free products, in laundry, home cleaning and personal care that there is no excuse not to use them. Give them a try, some of them actually work very well, just as well as the chemical filled brands and sometimes even better.

Whatever you choose to do please read the ingredients in all your products, yes I know you may need a magnifying glass as they make sure it's all so small.
