A major new study published in the European Journal of Cancer Care has reported that children aged 9 or younger have a 21% greater risk of dying from leukaemia if they live close to a nuclear power plant. The report examined 17 scientific studies, covering 136 nuclear sites in the UK, Canada, France, USA, Germany, Japan and Spain. The scientists discovered that death rates increased by up to 24% in children younger than 9, and by 18% in young people up to the age of 25. The study was unusual in being able to measure the health of the populations before and after the nuclear facilities were constructed, allowing it to control for natural factors.
